The Stress Index gives you the big picture, but MoodBoss goes deeper with six basic emotion indexes. Each is shown as a percentage (0 – 95) and helps see which colour dominates today. Three ‘bright’ emotions —joy, interest, calm—and the ‘dark triad’—anxiety, sadness, anger.
All formulas share the same structure, yet the weights for every hormone and for each sex differ. This lets results for women and men be compared without losing accuracy.
For the six emotions the display stops at 95 %. This lets the scale stay clear: you spot the “hurricane” at once and never see a number over the limit. Think of a battery gauge: it may read 100 %, but never 101 %. We use the same idea, setting the ceiling at 95 % so no one meets a puzzling “112 % joy”. There is also a 3 % floor; anything lower is rounded up so the scale is not cluttered with tiny fractions.
The Stress Index needs no cap—it already runs in the familiar 0–100 % range and is the main “weather” scale.
Table of the six indexes
| Emotion | Range, % | High value meaning |
| Joy | 0–95 | Energy — lightness, surge of strength |
| Interest | 0–95 | Focus — curiosity, sharp attention |
| Calm | 0–95 | Recovery — nervous system at ease |
| Anxiety | 0–95 | Tension — scanning for threats, restlessness |
| Sadness | 0–95 | Brakes — low drive, wish for solitude |
| Anger | 0–95 | Defence — flashes of irritation, harsh tone |
Bright side: joy, interest, calm.
Dark triad: anxiety, sadness, anger.
Bright side
Joy — 70 %
Example. You hum in the shower and walk faster than usual.
Boost it. Up-tempo music and warm light.
If it drops. Close the news feed and grab something rich in tryptophan—yoghurt, turkey.
Interest — 65 %
Example. Reading an article, you lose track of time.
Boost it. Break work into short steps with a visible payoff.
If it drops. Change scenery: stand by the window or move to another desk.
Calm — 80 %
Example. A slow-moving queue doesn’t bother you.
Maintain it. Mute needless alerts, tidy your space.
If below 40 %. Three rounds of 4-7-8 breathing or a warm shower cut cortisol within minutes.
Dark triad
Anxiety — 60 %
Example. Checking messages every five minutes.
Ease it. “Grounding”: name five objects around you, stating colour and shape. Avoid extra caffeine.
Sadness — 55 %
Example. You just want a blanket and silence.
Ease it. Make a list of micro-tasks (“wash the cup”, “call a friend”); each tick sends a dose of dopamine. If sadness stays above 70 % two days running, add ten minutes of light exercise with music.
Anger — 75 %
Example. A slow lift grates on your nerves, replies turn sharp.
Ease it. Let the body vent: twenty squats or a brisk walk outside. Lower phone volume and screen brightness. If outbursts occur often, talk with a doctor or therapist.
Combining the six indices with the Stress Index
- Storm + high anger → remove conflict triggers: noise, arguments, over-tight schedule.
- Light breeze + high interest → perfect slot for studying or brainstorming.
- Rising wind + low calm → a 20-minute nap or meditation can prevent a storm.
Practice in four steps
- Morning. After a glass of water, open MoodBoss.
– Calm 65 % / Stress 45 %: tackle a demanding project.
– Anxiety 60 % / Stress 68 %: take a breathing pause and move the heavy meeting. - Daytime. If interest jumps above 70 %, allocate time for a new task.
- Evening. Check the chart weekly: many storms mean that sleep, diet or activity need more attention.
- Calm kit. List three personal reset tools—music, warmth, stretching—and use them as soon as the wind picks up.
The essentials
The six indexes are a compass, not labels. High anxiety signals it is time to shore up with breathing and breaks; high joy is a chance to share energy. MoodBoss turns hormonal language into clear percentages: strengthen the bright side, soften the dark triad—your inner barometer will always point out the right course.
